THE ASIAN OUTREACH

A Historical Sketch

The Missionaries of our Lady of La Salette in a General Chapter decision join in the Missionary Spirit of the Church by reaching out to other countries, especially in Asia. Even though the Indian Mission is not officially included, as it has already been established, the Asian Outreach Program has been thought of as reaching out to our brethren Asia.

Since its inception, the director of the Program was Rev. Fr. Jose Nacu, M.S. With all the imagination that can only be attributed to a person like Fr. Nacu, the Asian Outreach Program underwent labor pangs of birth even from the beginning. As it was stipulated, Fr. Nacu wanted to reach to Burma (now Myanmar) but the visa restrictions drove him to Indonesia.

Finally he was to depend on the Missionaries of the Holy Family (MSF), a congregation very close to the La Salettes as it was founded by one of the members. Jogyakarta was his center of activities when he finally brought in a few candidates. With a lot of casualties along the way we have now three (3) priests from Indonesia:  Fr. Agoes Rahardjo, MS, Fr. Andreas Sudarsono, MS and Fr. Stevanus Suharna, MS.

Fr. Nacu asked the help of Fr. Bernard Taylor, M.S., a native of Burma, to help him with the outreach program in Burma. Being a native, and with the presence of our Missionaries in the country for 42 years, Fr. Bernie was able to establish more contacts with the hierarchy and offered to work full time in the program. In fact La Salette never left Burma, even if the missions closed in 1986.

Most of our candidates from the far out areas. Since education is really bad in the centers, it is worse in the districts. Because of the political situation, it is safer to be silent than to say anything.

In spite of everything, with the restricted resources, the Ina ng Pag-asa Province has been able to accomplish many things in terms of Outreach to Burma. We were able to broaden the minds of priests, seminarians, and students.

At the moment......

With the prayers of Our Lady of La Salette, we should be able to reach out to many of our brethren in Asia.
