Father Ulrich Taube, SS.CC, who was in charge of the mission in the Kalihi Cathedral ran a census of lower Kalihi.  The results convinced him that the time has come to build a church for the people of Kalihi Kai.  He embarked on a collection fund drive for over 5 years.

With additional help from the Catholic Mission, Fr. Ulrich was able to build an attractive wooden frame church whose steeple rose protectingly over the surrounding cottages. It had a sitting capacity of 400.  For 11 years, Fr. Ulrich gave much to his parishioners.
